from 2008
In the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, a powerful idea took root. As millions of Americans faced tough choices between their financial stability and personal wellness, Wei Zhang—a mechanical engineer with 15 years of experience in commercial fitness equipment manufacturing—watched his sister struggle with this very dilemma. After being forced to cancel her gym membership due to budget constraints, she found herself cut off from the fitness routine that had become central to her life.
A Vision for Change
Working at a leading gym equipment manufacturer, Wei had observed a troubling trend: commercial fitness machines were becoming increasingly complex and expensive, yet these additions weren’t necessarily translating into better workouts. He believed there was a better way—that through focused engineering and smart design, high-quality fitness equipment could be made more accessible without sacrificing performance.
Building the Foundation
Wei found an ideal partner in Lisa Chen, a physical therapist whose clinical experience provided crucial insights into how proper equipment design could prevent common exercise injuries. Together, they embarked on a two-year research journey, diving deep into why people often abandoned their home fitness equipment. Their investigation revealed crucial pain points: issues with stability, comfort, and noise levels were frequently cited as reasons for disappointment.
Community-Driven Development
In 2010, the first VIGBODY prototype found its home in a local community center, marking the beginning of our user-centered design approach. Rather than limiting feedback to engineers and designers, we put our equipment in the hands of real people—users of varying ages and fitness levels who provided invaluable real-world insights. This collaborative approach helped shape what would become our core philosophy: fitness equipment should adapt to people’s lives, not the other way around.
Our Ongoing Commitment
Today, VIGBODY continues to honor these founding principles. Our engineering team maintains a presence in community centers and home gyms, learning directly from our customers and incorporating their feedback into our designs.
